What I want to talk about today really came to me on the way in while listening to the /Filmcast podcast. It struck me that one of the funnier, more bankable, and likable guys in movies today is in grave danger, and perhaps is already fallen prey to typecasting. And while I’m writing this I realize you could say that about several of his contemporaries. My specific example is Paul Rudd. Someone who is very difficult to hate, has good laughs, but for all basic purposes is playing the same role very often recently. While he had great roles in Wet Hot American Summer and Anchorman, his recent roles in Role Models, I Love You, Man, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, etc. have been fairly one note. I’m all for someone building a career for themselves, but I’m afraid that one of the genuinely funniest people in showbiz today is being potentially wasted on playing the affable straight man.

I think Rudd can definitely be branched out, we’ve already seen him play different, awesome roles earlier in his career. It doesn’t make sense really that now that he’s famous he’s being thrown into the same roles all the time. Okay, I’m not gonna rant here. I think there are several other (especially comedic) actors working today who are famous or on the rise who are being thrown into the same roles with a fair amount of frequency.

I'm sensitive, but not too sensitive as to drive away men. This face says it all.

Two questions:

Anyone else you can think of toiling in the same end of the pool over and over again?

Is this a function of a lack of new/interesting comedic roles or is Hollywood just pegging these folks for better or worse?

Jim: I hope Rudd retires from films to expand on his fascinating Celery Man routine.

Karla: I think Jonah Hill definitely falls into this category. I think he’s capable of more but it would be really hard for him to make the crossover into a more dramatic role. Maybe he’s not even interested in something more serious. He’s younger and probably having a lot of fun working on his comedies and voice overs. I sort of have Jason Schwartzman-sized hopes for him and I wouldn’t want to see him get pigeon-holed into being the funny, humorously awkward kid in every film he does.

Jim: Don’t all fat actors get typecast as the buddy in the buddy comedy, no matter how hard they try?

Also, in order to be typecasted, you have to demonstrate that you have some sort of range that is not being exploited by the industry for whatever reason (probably money…). Not hating on Jonah Hill, but he hasn’t made Wet Hot American Summer yet. (and as an aside, I think there are actually very few comedians who AREN’T typecasted)

Wath this movie now!

If I had to go with someone I think I’d take on one of Seth’s man-crushes, Joseph Gordon Levitt. He just stepped out of his typical sensitive dude in off beat indie comedy and seemed to be stuck somewhere between Zach Braff and Jon Krasinsky on the charming but ultimately forgettable scale. He was great in Inception, and if he really is going to play the Riddler in the next Batman, then my argument is pretty much moot, but I think he’s on the precipice of either sliding back into “make the chicks swoon and not much else mode” or over-capitalizing on Inception‘s success and taking on a series of inferior sidekick roles morphing into poor man’s Edward Norton…

Caroline: “Poor man’s Edward Norton”…love it.

Lets apply that to some ladies. Leslie Man is the poor woman’s Joan Cusack…albeit a hotter version.

As for the A-listers, Cate Blanchett needs to grab a crack whore roll fast because while admittedly an amazing actress, she always carries with her the same air of dignified grace. It is as if her characters are always inner queens…even when shes not Elizabeth. I just want to see if she can lose the inherent cultivation and get a little crude.

Patrick: Michael Cera seems to play the same awkward-nerdy leading man over and over again. He definitely looks the part but I would love to see him in something that’s not funny.

Seth: I have to pick at Jim’s “man-crush” statement. I wouldn’t consider him a man-crush personally, it’s just weird to have a famous doppelganger. And I’d gather that his roles have been pretty varied throughout his career actually. In fact, a quick glance at this credits shows only ONE (MAYBE two if you count 10 Things, but they were made several years apart) “make the chicks swoon and not much else mode”. He’s been a High school noir detective (Brick), a broken-down bank robber-turned-hero (The Lookout, excellent if you haven’t seen it), an archvillian (GI Joe), a misanthrope (Hesher), an Iraq war veteran (Stop-Loss), and the future holds more variety with nothing resembling one of these roles. Just scan his IMDB page, he’s had a pretty varied career. Which is one of the reasons I don’t mind sharing a face with him.

So while I may have done nothing to disprove Jim’s claim of a man-crush (for me that’s Matt Damon or the aforementioned Ed Norton) I think I’ve safely defended my Doppelganger.

Patrick: Jim was on the money with the fat actor’s always being the buddy, never getting the girl, and being the nice guy etc… Although I think a recent trend, in most of the movies you’ve just named, busts the fat guy type cast. The chubby guy actually gets the girl in King of Queens, Forty Year Old Virgin, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall as well.

Comedic actors not branching out doesn’t seem like type casting because the actors named seemingly have a choice of movie projects and choose to swing in their wheel house and make butt loads of cash, Hollywood if nothing else is formulaic. If these guys are victims of anything it’s that. They might not get too many acting roles outside of comedy because of the way they look or their acting history. For example Jason Statham won’t be playing any geeky high school guys any time soon, but actors like Rudd, Hill and others are big enough to have a choice. Actor’s ability to choose probably has a place in the definition as well.

Type cast as double edge sword hypothetical role play: Me -Movie producer Sandra Bullock- as Danny Trejo

Movie Producer: Hey Danny Trejo you’d be perfect for this new role as Mexican inmate # 5 in the remake of The Great Escape.

Danny Trejo: Well I guess if I want to eat and keep doing what I love I have to play this role again, but next time I swear I’m holding out for the role of Wall Street exec!

Sorry Dan-o that role’s not coming around the bend anytime soon. No tatted Latinos on the Forbes list means no tatted Gordon Geko’s, (although he could actually play the Mexican inmate in the Wall Street sequel and I can’t even talk about lebuff right now an actor who I hate but consistently like his movies.)

So my answer is Danny Trejo eternally the Mexican former/future/current inmate when I feel he has the potential for more but not the choice.

Sherman: Not a comedic typecast, but it would be nice to see Morgan Freeman play a perverted serial killer or anything other than “black mentor” (today’s version of “magical negro”, which Freeman also used to play all the time). And as a sub-typecast as “black mentor” he’s also typecast as “God”. Which is a lot cooler.

Kevin: My answer is Paul Rudd’s companion in Role Models-Sean William Scott

Think about it, name a movie when he wasn’t an updated version of Stifler. Sure, American Pie was the teen movie of our generation and that may have cemented him. But to his credit, he fucking nails the duchey-yet funny dude role better than anyone. I stand by that he’s a funny actor, who can mix in classic physical comedy, stupid frat guy jokes, but still work in some heart. I enjoyed him in American Pies (really the only reedeming part of the sequels), Road Trip, The Rundown (yeah, I said it). Sure he has some crappy movies, i.e. Dukes of Hazzard, but it’s the last example of Role Models that made me think there was more to this SWS character. By all accounts he plays an updated, more adult version of Stifler in that film, but he showed some restraint and somehow makes that character likeable against all odds, and really seemed to add some subtly to the role. Also, showed he could really bring in the emotional life lesson part of the storyline. Maybe he’s typecast thats all he can do, but I really think he can do a lot more as an actor and comedic role outside of douchy athlete in high school. I wan to see him get a shot at something different, at least to see how it goes. More SWS in my life I say!

What say you Ramblers? Are there other actors who you care for who are in danger of being typecast or are !GASP! already? I think this is really a function of kinda stock characters being tweaked in a small way and people being set-up to take certain roles. Somebody write some new characters!

Seems like it’s been awhile which is a direct result of the fact that it has been awhile. Speaking of summer, these box office offerings SUCK. Just bottom line, stink. Lots of muck, muck, and more muck. There aren’t many original properties being produced this summer as big budget films (save for Nolan’s Inception) and almost everything is a sequel (which can be awesome, see: Toy Story 3,but often are part of that mucky muck) or they are movie adaptations of television franchises (see: A-Team and The Last Airbender). Well, since Hollywood seems hellbent on making nothing original unless Inception delivers us from their retread evil, we need to discuss what franchises, movies, TV shows, music videos, etc. should be dusted off and Retreaded (new word).

I know it’s been awhile, but dust off those top hats and panel away good friends.

Sherman: Just to get it out there… Arrested Development. A more thorough answer will follow. But, first, the weather!

Sherman LOVES "Mr. Wendal"

Jim: Having just put myself through a thorough (and surprisingly enjoyable) re-watching of the Alien Quadrilogy I have to say that I would be very intrigued by a re-boot of the entire series. I know, I know, there have been a bazillion Alien spin-offs that went horribly, horribly wrong, but that’s not what I’m after. Let’s remake the original four, Alien, Aliens, Alien^3 and Alien Resurrection with the same conceits and mostly the same plot-lines but with new actors (sit down Wynona Rider, sit down), a new crop of directors (did you know Alien^3 was David Fincher’s (Se7en, Zodiac) first feature length film? Or that the dude who did Alien Resurrection went on to direct indie cult classic Amelie??) and even better effects.

The big point behind this is that a lot of these retreads are based of off flimsy starting points. Alien’s legacy has been utterly tarnished by it’s spin-offs (AvP was on TV this weekend, made me want to barf). If the series was rebooted (or, hell, just do four more sequels, Sigourney Weaver is obviously still up for it, right?) we’d maybe be able to remember how badass the original Quadrilogy was! Alien is by far the best Ridley Scott film (the effects alone are leaps and bounds ahead of a certain sci-fi epic that kicked off the year before, what was it called? Star… something? Battle? I’m going with Star Battle) and Aliens is so good James Cameron put twenty years into one movie trying to beat it and failed. Alien^3 was mostly a pile of poop, but it gave David Fincher his start, and Resurrection was one too many Winona Ryders short of being an awesome movie. I would pay money to see the films remade with say, this line up of directors:

Alien — Christopher Nolan
Aliens — Neil Blomkamp
Alien^3 — Guillermo del Toro
Alien Ressurection — Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu

You would watch this retread and you would love it, right?

Kevin: I’d be on board for a revamp of Aliens 3 and Ressurection. Alien and Aliens are just too damn good and untouchable in my book. I think what should have happened in 3 and 4 was to have Newt (the surviving girl in Aliens) take over as the strong lead with Ripley dying (and staying dead) in 3. Would have been epic-the whole cloning Ripley-alien hybrid from one drop of blood in Ressurection was flimsy. I like the directors you got lined up for sure, but what leading lady these days could fill those shoes well? Thats a tough one. One lesson to be learned from Ressurection however is that all Aliens movies to be made must have 100% more Ron Perlman-yeah, that means twin Ron Perlman’s in the fourth installment.

Jim: See the point would be that the first two films would be good, but not nearly as good as the originals, but the 3rd and 4th would far exceed the originals. I just don’t think you can redo 3 and 4 without rebooting the whole thing. Way too confusing.

My first instinct to replace Sigourney was Tilda Swinton. She’s got the tall, athletic, tough girl thing going on. But, if the project takes 20 years to do all four films like last time, she would be even older than Sigourney by the time the fourth rolls around. I have a hard time coming up with young lasses who can really do the action thing the way early 20′s Sigourney did it… all I can come up with Natalie Portman, and she’s too short/can’t act and might even be too old at this point… If we could have nabbed Angelina 8 years ago and started it, that would have been ideal.

It really is such a tough role to cast, because when you think about how utterly unique it was to have an actress carry an action/sci-fi franchise like that. They don’t make ‘em like they used to.

I wouldn't even try to retread her.

Sherman: How about Anne Hathaway as Ripley?

Seth: Three options in ascending order:

3. Biel- Not enough acting chops.

2. Emma Stone- Bada** in Zombieland, but might play too young/pretty.
1. Summer Glau- Already been a terminator, sounds like she could be PERFECT.

Patrick: The new Ripley should totally be some sort of multi-racial actress. I always chuckle when everyone in space is white…especially because by the time we can travel faster than light, the human race will be much more integrated racially. Maybe Zhang Ziyi? Although I don’t know that her English is good enough.

Kevin: Zoe Saldana as Ripley. Done.Tall, good looking and now the sci-fi “It” girl with Star Trek and Avatar-also, action cred with the Losers. She’s so hot her blue alien sort of look alike was attractive. Also as Patrick suggested, multi-ethnic.

Chase: I would like them to take another swing at Caddy Shack 2. Which is by far the worst sequel ever made and perhaps top 10 worst movie ever. Reasons why the time is right:

We havent had a good golf movie since 96 (dual threat Happy Gilmore and Tin Cup).

Chevy Chase is back in rare form (PLEASE WATCH COMMUNITY)

Bill Murray needs to undo what Dan Aykroyd messed up.

We all want to see Lacy Underall as hot mom

There has never been a movie with more potential that failed so throughly.

F-

Sherman: For an actual remake, I submit Gone With the Wind. The former top grossing movie of all time is full of drama, themes of loss and redemption (or redemption and loss). Plus, the classic needs to only skew some of its line readings and acting to become a vicious criticism of postbellum racial politics, because so much of the movie is subsumed by a paternalistic take on them. The movie is a classic human drama for good reason, it’s time it be updated in a way that acknowledges the only great failing of the postwar South overlooked originally.

Caroline: I am a lazy movie goer but a big modern lit bookworm so…

One of my favorite books of all time was brutally massacred as a movie– A Prayer for Owen Meany turned into Simon Birch. The book is twisted, sad and hilarious. The movie was just crap. John Irving agreed apparently, claiming he doubted his masterpiece could ever turn into a decent movie. Irving is a blowhard, I want to see it done. I would also love to see The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and The Poisonwood Bible turned into epic dramadies on the big screen.

Our love for Superheroes makes this one RIPE for the picking

My adaptation is maybe the nerdiest thing I have ever suggested: I would like to see a live action version of the anime Akira.

If you’re not familiar, this is often included in lists of the top 100 movies of all time and commonly considered the best anime adaptation of all time. I saw this when I was like 12 and it’s always stuck with me-definitely worth a viewing. This cartoon is based on a very popular manga series in the 80′s in Japan. Basically it deals with a post-apocolyptic Tokyo, waring rival motorcycle gangs, people with telekinetic powers that the government supresses and eventually learning that a psychic boy caused a nuclear-like explosion with his mind. This is perfect for a modern live action update. The universe it takes place in is highly stylized and engrossing, furthermore it’s a large civilization commentary/evil government program storyline but told throught two main, very likeable teenage characters in one of the city’s bike gangs, one of which has fledgling psychic powers. In the right director’s hands you could end up with something badass. Imagine a Blade Runneresque coming of age tale. Love story included as well. Also, it’s super violent, and would pull in the summer blockbuster action crowd, sci-fi nerds, and if handled correctly would gain mass appeal based on the storylines of struggling with adolesence, the nature of government and revolting against it, impending environmental/nuclear doom etc. Again, this could come out terribly if given to the wrong people (see The Last Airbender), but in the right hands (JJ Abrams production?) could be absolutely the movie of the summer/year if it happens.

(Editor’s Note: Leo Dicaprio’s production company has plans for this very idea! But it looks like production is stalled)

Greg: Interesting call on Alien 3. Although I thought it was good enough, del Toro is a good call for any monster movie, provided he doesn’t try to get too cute like he did in Hellboy 2.

Everyone can agree that 4 sucked ass.

A Jaws remake will be awful!

Is it too early to call for a redo on the Star Wars 1-3?

I think a new version of Citizen Kane would be interesting. Not necessarily better but interesting to see what subtle changes could be made. Worst director for this would be Tim Burton.

Seth: Despite M. Night’s recent poopfest of a Toon-to-Movie adaptation, I’m thinking there might be some agreement here. Inspector Gadget is a character who gripped the hearts of many of America’s youth in the 80′s and then got totally jobbed in the 90′s by a terrible live-action film. Thanks for nothing Ferris Beuller. And then also thanks for nothing, Weird Alien from 3rd Rock From The Sun. I mean Gadget is a guy who deserves his own epic portrayal on the big screen and we already have all of the elements of something awesome. He’s a private eye with endless access to gadgets and two killer sidekicks in Penny and her best friend Brain. And how about villains? Oh I dunno, one of the best, most menacing-yet-largely-unseen villians EVER!

I still get chills! Also when do we get one of these sweet books:

You can have your iPads, I want a PennyBook

I just feel like there is way too much cool in this show to have had such a heinous outing. Dream cast and crew:

Inspector Gadget- Jim Carrey- He did it to us once as a hilarious detective, why not again? Honorable Mentions: Will Ferrell, Dark Horse- Paul Rudd

Penny- Bah I dunno. Is Dakota Fanning still a thing? What about Saorsie Ronan, those are both young right? I have no idea.

Brain- the dog from Marmaduke

Director- David Gordon Green, he did Pineapple Express and managed to balance action and comedy really well. Ben Stiller, ditto withTropic Thunder. Edgar Wright, ditto Hot Fuzz.

So the aim would be to really ratchet up the action and keep the lighthearted umm heart of the original show. Why can’t this be done!?

Patrick: I’d like to see a re-do of Thundercats. Live action. I heard there might be one in the works, but who knows if it’s true (and I’m too lazy to Google it right now…Seth?).

Seth: This may be as close as we ever get unfortunately. This along with Voltron is one of the most rumored after and sought after remakes, but there’s rarely any movement on these properties.

From here the discussion (if you can call it that) spiraled into Sharktopus sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. I just don’t even have the energy for that. But really it’s probably going to happen so we should be ready. What franchises would you like to see brought to the big screen? We know they’re coming people, might as well tell CrazyWood what you want. It’s our only real chance. It’s probably too late. Nevermind it’s definitely too late.

Well folks, one of our very own has thrown down the lyrical gauntlet. Yes, it’s true Caroline (unknowingly) issued a challenge via a social media status which I think maybe we can tackle. Sherman pointed out that it would be a great AMOTUI and I couldn’t agree more. So what did Caroline challenge? To find a better opening line than “In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey” from “Loser” by Beck. Now while I definitely think that lyric rocks, I have a few which tickle my fancy a little bit more myself. My fancy is just ALWAYS being tickled. Right now you are thinking “ENOUGH about your fancy!” or “What is a fancy?” Both are legitimate, but neither is what you should be thinking, which is “What opening lyric trumps Beck’s?”

And finally, I think the only way to solve this is to each nominate ONE opening line with a short defense. Then I will post them to PR and we’ll let the heathens decide. It’s only fair. You know what they say “Heathens Know Best!”

Caroline: Don’t blame me for this…I didn’t know I could throw down the gauntlet with a gmail status.

While my “best ever” comes from my tendency to hyperbolize in the moment…I’m gonna stick up for my choice. This is because Beck rocks and his lyrics in general have that wonderful combination of smart yet sad humor. “In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey” sets up the song brilliantly by throwing the theme bluntly on the table. For all the emo, poetic mumbo-jumbo songs can do, I really dig songs with lyrics that are smart and vicious.

However, I am biased towards any chimpanzee reference. That has tainted my choice. A couple of you on this panel know that one of the easiest ways to rile me up is to call a chimpanzee a monkey. The fact that Beck understands the distinction between primates makes the nerdy fan girl in me swoon.

Sherman: Yeah, Caroline, we know you love when Mark Salling sings the Beck line.

Mine poses something of an existential challenge to the concept of “pop-culture”, so I’ve got a back-up in case it’s disqualified. I go back to pop-culture of yester-century and nominate “Batti, batti o bel Masetto” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Translated, it means “Beat me, beat me, oh dear Masetto!” (followed by, “beat your little lamb, Zerlina”) and sung by Zerlina, a commoner who has been seduced on her wedding night by the titular Don Juan (Juan=John=Giovanni). Masetto is her dumb straight man of a husband who by dumb luck manages to appear just before Don Giovanni seals the deal and is angry and heart-broken.

So how does Zerlina respond? With a kinky, S&M themed aria, of course! “I’ll stand here as meek as a lamb and bear the blows you lay on me,” she goes on to sing, but in that very first, very catchy “Batti, batti o bel Masetto!” Zerlina has already won her victory and made the “good” girl of the opera as intriguing as the “bad” guy.

Brad:Well no matter what follows that will sound dumb. So I may as well try.

As in most music related questions I can really only summon that which I’m diggin’ at the moment. After checking my current Grooveshark playlist I have to say that Fever Ray’s “When I Grow Up” has a KILLER opening line (as well as many other subsequent lyrics).

“When I grow up, I want to be a forester and run through the moss in high heels”

WHAT?!?!? Just an extremely conflicting image but still one that summons a singular scence: giant lumbering trunks and a dainty little forest nymph just lilting over and through the dewey underbrush. In my mind she’s wearing a fire man’s outfit (huh?) as well. I figure, if she can sing a line like that then I can add whatever imagery I want to it. And why does she have to wait until she’s grown up to do it?

Certainly not the best, but just an example of what it takes to really make me listen to lyrics (which I sometimes overlook/neglect in favor of ROCKedness).

Chase: My goal was to identify songs that had both a badass first line and a first line that summed up the entirety of the entire song, my choice….
“Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street…” from Joe Jackson’s “Is she really going out with him?”

This song is a classic and has been covered by critically acclaimed groups like Sugar Ray… come on i know you guys all owned the Floored CD. But really what draws me to this line is that it sums up the whole point of the song and the inner monologue of all of us Pop Culture dorks had/have about hot girls. Bonus points for the ape reference.

ALSO, this comes up when you Google Image it- Sherman

Caroline: It is settled. Primate references for the win.

For the record Mark Sallings could sing the phonebook to me and I wouldn’t really be listening with my ears. (Random Caroline tangent– I don’t think singers should be all that attractive, it takes away from their music. They are better odd looking. In fact, I cant really think of a conventionally hot singer I adore. Not a challenge.)

Patrick: Beastie Boys – “Sabotage”

“I can’t stand it. I know you planned it!”

The lyric should be written ”AAAAAAAAAHHHHIII can’t stand it …” With the accompanying guitar, drums, and bass this opening lyric has more energy than the sun. This lyric sets up the song well in that is about angry possibly justified paranoia . I’m not sure who’s sabotaging the beasties. It could the Man, their parents keeping them from partying, or the Reds. Whoever it is I wouldn’t want to be them. Immediately recognizable, incredibly energetic, encompasses the entire song.

Karla: The song that I first thought of comes from a place I never would have expected it to. It’s “The Good Kind” by The Wreckers.

Do you want to run away together? I would say it was your best line ever. Too bad I fell for it.

I hope that you all will let me slide because it’s maybe the first two or three lines to the song. It’s not particularly cool, or deep, or esoteric. It does rhyme… sort of. But it’s something that resonates. It immediately drew me in. I never got into Michelle Branch or even this duo, but this line alone made me sit up and take notice. Maybe it’s just because I’m a girl, but I instantly felt and understood it. Musically, I don’t think it’s a great song. I don’t really even like it all that much. I think you could pretty much delete the rest of the song because the opening line backed by simple acoustic strumming is better than the over-engineered body. But that opening line always gets me.

Kevin: Man Seth, This post just killed a day and a half at work doing an archeological dig through my iTunes, which lead to me saying “Holy s***, I love that song!” alot to things I had forgot about/haven’t had in rotation much lately. This has been tough-I feel like most my favorite songs have great lyrics in the chorus/hooks/2nd verse etc…it’s harder to find one that really hits it out of the gate. I also found that its hard to seperate great opening lyrics (i.e. clever such as the Beck suggestion) vs. recognizable lyrics. I was searching for clever lyrics or those that set the tone of the song to come perfectly. I think I found both with the opening lyric to “Guarantees” by Atmosphere on the last album, When life gives you lemons, you paint that shit gold. This is a great bare-bones song with Slug rapping/singing over a blues guitar about his father’s difficult life working dead-end jobs, struggling with his income, toublesome son (the author/narrator), ex-wife, and overall the commercialism of the USA. The songs starts:

“Man, these wharehouse wages killed the ends’ introduction…”.

I think that it’s just an increadibly clever way to use a familiar phrase and turn it just slightly to fit the song, it’s also increadibly somber-which carries through the song perfectly. I absolutely love Atmosphere and especially this album, and this song is one of his best. I think he is by far one of the most poetic artists let alone rappers currently out there. I think this song and first line illustrates it perfectly. If you don’t have any experience with his music, or this album-get on it. You are guaranteed to find a track you love (no pun inteded). Check the video-my personal favorite line is actually later in the song (“Kill me in my 30′s in the name of progress…”).

Jim: This took me about a day and a half to come up with. I argued with myself over a number of newish songs about this, but finally settled on a classic.

“We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout” from the song “Jackson” by Johnny Cash. The song is a duet with June about a marriage fizzling out and the partners separately skipping town for Jackson, where they expect to raise hell. There is no doubt this is the best Johnny/June song, especially since they recorded it later in their marriage during a kinda rocky time. Also, if Wikipedia is to be believed, Cash originally had this line at the end of the song. His songwriter, Jerry Leiber, upon hearing an early cut of the song said “these verses suck, put that last one at the beginning”. Cash protested saying he couldn’t start a song with the climax, to which Leiber replies “Oh, yes you can,” rest is history, yadda yadda.

But really, they don’t write these things like they used to. To me, this line is nothing short of literary. By itself, it is the quintessential mid-20th Century American story (1968 — lots of WWII marriages had imploded, and now their kid’s marriages were doing the same). The sort of sarcastic neo-romanticism of Johnny’s baritone is balanced perfectly in this line by June’s brassy overtone. It really is the climax of the song, but it also sets the table for a song that is both an insightful comment on a marriage and a raucous good time.

Seth: Well, I’m going to try to defib this discussion since I think it’s worthy of more responses. And here’s my choice. I go with the antithesis of Caroline’s original offering, except it still fits the “clever and vicious” claim. From Brand New’s “Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t”:

“I am heaven sent, don’t you dare forget”

I think Jesse Lacey’s delivery really makes this lyric stand out for me. It’s quiet and foreboding and it offers the kind of confidence and assurance that smacks Beck’s lyrics in the face. The song meanders between his feelings of ROCK Superiority, but really it’s a mock to all those who think they’re the bee’s knees because they sell out arenas. Taken on its own, it’s a great line about a relationship between a musician and his audience, but taken with the rest of the song it’s the clearest line of mockery in what is an honest piece of music. Also I just like it. And the title of the song is a line from Home Alone 2. Which is awesome. If you haven’t listened to all of this album, you missed out. Emo or not, it’s one of the best from the early aughts.

Creepy Astronaut!!! Still should listen to this

Chase: Throwback to Sophomore year….
“When it’s time to party we will party hard”- Andrew W.K.

Josh: I could never understand what Andrew W.K.’s message was in that song. But then again, how many people can really understand the nuances of his music?

Chase’s comment reminds me of another opening line involving parting by poet laureates the Vengaboys from their hit, “We Like to Party”:

“We like to party, we like, we like, to party”

Not only does this euro-pop group remind us of the soul’s innate need to party, but also that “hey now, hey now, hear what I say now, happiness is just around the corner”. It really drives home the importance of hope in the future and……… and…….. that the Vengabus is coming?

Brad: I would also like to point people towards another of WK’s finest moments, “It’s Time to Party”:

“It’s time to party, Let’s party
Hang out with yourself and have a crazy party
Hey you, let’s party
Have a killer party and Party!

It gets better from there, but I think those speak for themselves.”

Poet Laureate

Let me present one other addition to my favorite opening line that I just remembered today, from Failure’s “The Nurse Who Loved Me”:

:Say hello, to the rug’s topography”

The song’s about a drug addict falling in love with she who gives him his fix, but that line just really captures those times when (due to a variety of reasons) you may be face down on the floor and just really exploring the various tracts of rug/floor beneath you. We’ve all been there.

Seth: Brad loves heroin.

Summer: For some reason, the first thing that comes to mind is:

“She was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean, she was the best damn woman I had ever seen” -You Shook Me All Night Long, AC/DC

Not sure its my favorite or the best, but it stuck with me!

Stevo: Although I think Seth’s choice may be the best so far, mostly because I think it’s probably my favorite Brand New song. These may not be the best, but I like them. I have 2 other choices essentially saying the same thing. They both stress being true to yourself, in varied ways. One comes from 311 and the other from Brand New.It’s more like two lines but talking about staying true to yourself, although in a very strong statement:

“You know I’ll not renounce my views and do what others do. I’d rather tweak the hemlock than be like you.” -Still Dreaming, 311

“Who do you carry the torch for young man? Do you believe in anything?” -Archers, Brand New

Greg: I’m a little ashamed of my friends that this did not come up:

“Tonight, I’m gonna have myself a real good time, I feel ali-i-i-ive.” Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now

Freddy Mercury and Friend having a good time

Personal Fave:

“Everybody’s talkin bout the stormy weather and what’s a man to do but work out whether its true?” Sonic Youth, Teenage Riot (this is on the longer side but I feel it still applies because there’s no pause in between clauses)

Well if there’s one thing that I’m certain of, it’s that that cat is very please to be with Freddy (R.I.P). But how are the lyric selections? I want everyone who reads this to vote for their favorite opening line and the winner gets a prize to be named a later date (it will almost certainly be a high 5!) Ok I need to run along and find someone who loves me as much as that cat loves Freddy. Also, thanks Caroline for unwittingly spurring a topic that lasted almost two weeks!

So, this weekend is Memorial Day, which for some reason we still refer to as the “Unofficial Kick-Off To Summer,” when really it’s kind of been like common law married into being the “Official Kick-Off To Summer.” Right? Let’s just give Memorial Day it’s due. THAT combined with the fact that it’s been hotter than a German for Hasselhoff over the last few days. For all intents and purposes, it’s summertime. Break out those bikinis ladies and gentlemen (Equal Opportunity Blogging!)! And for your listening pleasure, the AMOTUI team has put together their favorite summer jams into one amazing playlist (located at the bottom of the post). The mix is old and new, but the vibe is the same, ladies and gents: The Pop Ramblings Summer Jams LP

Jim: “Forced to Love” - Broken Social Scene, lots of guitars, catchy as all hell and even finds the appropriate use of the flute in a rave up.

“Drunk Girls” – LCD Soundsystem, I’m all kinds of excited to see these guys at Pitchfork in July. Also, this has got one of the best Spike Jonze vids in a while:

“Spill the Wine” Eric Burdon and War – Mexican grass, sunshine caressing your face, hollywood movie dreams, what else do you want? The Hall of the Mountain King???

“Get it On (Bang a Gong), T-Rex – get it on, bang a gong, get it on, get it on, bang a gong, get it on HEY NOW!

Brad: “Waltz” by Fiona Apple is a great lazy summer song. As far as new songs go, I’ma go with “Nothing Like You” by Frightened Rabbit. Just too fun and to the point to leave off this list.

Patrick: “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus — It’s not lyrical poetry or musical genius but it definitely gets people moving and singing along, which is what a summer song should do.

“Folding Chair” by Regina Spektor — This IS lyrical poetry and some musical genius and it’s beach-themed (sure it’s a metaphor, but so what). It’s upbeat without being frantic.

“Swimming Pools” by Thao and the Get Down Stay Down — This evokes images of youthful summers spent getting pruny in the pool.

“Hot in Herre” by Jenny Owen Youngs — Hands down the best cover of a Nelly Song ever made.

Kevin: Jack Johnson and Paula Fuga-”Country Road”. You can hear this on the En Concert album/DVD from Jack. Is it cliche to listen to jack in the summer at the beach? Hell yeah, because it’s awesome. This song+ a Jon Daly (lemonade+iced tea vodka) in the backyard=awesome. Who doesn’t like a whistle section?

Surfer Blood-”Fast Jabroni”. Jabroni is the best word ever, and a fast one is always better than a slow. I got into this album through Seth, and even though it’s gotten a Brooklyn-hipster following (and I have severe issues with hipsters), I gotta love old school surf guitar in modern day. and they’re Floridian.

This guy likes it too!

B.O.B feat. Hayley Williams-”Airplanes”. The summer for me back in the day meant rolling to the beach with a bunch of friends with a boombox to rock on the sand to pass the time. That means listening to the radio and whatever pop/rap and R&B/alt-rock songs dominated the charts-don’t pretend like you didn’t rock some Nelly or Crazy Town in your car with the windows down in ’00. This song is going to be this summers chart topper-prediction!

Smoking with Superman-”Dance Motherf*****”. The list I was thinking of and most people will will be based around drinking at BBQs and yard games. However, if you have healthy dose of party in your heart you know the best conclusion to an all day BBQ is a drunk late night dance party. I always have a “dance party mode” playlist ready. This song is a good dancing tune, but clever and really unique. Put this on and feel sad-I dare you.(Not on Grooveshark Playlist so here!)

Can’t wait to rock the master playlist-Grooveshark will need to make a iPhone app to maximize party potential.

Karla: My two new ones are Sally Seltman’s infectious and sweet song “Harmony to my Heartbeat”. I imagine that I will hear this song play in my head when I think about the guy I marry. It’s light and fun, just like summer should be. But it doesn’t lack depth. Which music (and marriage) should not.And also Josh Rouse’s “I Will Live on Islands” which is so so danceable and which I had the pleasure of hearing live not too long ago. It makes you want to move to the Costa Blanca and just figure it out when you get there.

Toto’s “Africa” is a pick because it totally rocks and I will play it more than once on my 15 hr flight to the eponymous continent on Memorial Day Weekend.

Summer: This was made for me.

Windows Down Song: “Summer Girl”- Jessica Andrews — Bringing in the girly country music that my brother will tease me for. But nothing makes me want to roll down my windows and belt it out with my girlfriends like this song. It’s just a happy, upbeat song about enjoying the summer with your girlfriends.

These guys get it. PUPS!

It’s 9pm, 90 Degrees, and Still Light Outside Song: “Snails”- The Format — You know that perfect time of night only available in the summertime. It’s late, but the sun is down so it’s warm but not uncomfortable, and it is still light out. Fireflies are out, you’re sitting on the porch with your best friends just hanging out. That moment is encapsulated in this song.

Chilling on the Beach Song: “Flake”- Jack Johnson — Jack will always be the perfect beach music to me. So chill and relaxing.

Amped that the Weather is Warm Song: “Free Energy”- Free Energy — The power poppiness of the band just screams summertime to me. In fact, every time I listen to it I just think about how much better it will sound blasting from my speakers by the pool in July.

Also, for the record, my top 4 SUMMER songs:
4) Summer Girls, LFO
3) Summer Skin, Death Cab for Cutie
2) Summer Breeze, Seals & Croft
1) Summer Girl, Jessica Andrews

And for your listening pleasure.

Steve: Jack Johnson is phenomenal and I thought of him almost first given the surfer vibe and all. I can think of 3 songs off the top of my head:

“Summertime” – Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff: We all remember back to the 90′s when Zack, Kelly, AC, Lisa, Jessie, and Screech took that trip to Hawaii to save the Hideaway. Summertime brings me to that place, thinking of the ocean, palm trees, and beaches. Somehow, at the same time, because it references so many Philly locales, it takes me to the backyard BBQ’s, cycling down Kelly Drive, and all around awesome summer nights on the town in Philly. Great summer tune for me.

“Stay (Wasting Time)” – Dave Matthews Band: Just describes a hot summer day with your favorite girl wasting time together. Sounds like a solid summer afternoon.

“What I Got” – Sublime: I think it’s just the sound of this tune. Something about it makes me think summer. The whole thing makes me think BBQ on the beach with your best friends. I know that’s not at all what the lyrics say, but the vibe of the guitar and all just brings me to that place.

“Cousins” – Vampire Weekend: Not sure why but I just think of a summertime BBQ out on the back porch. Such an upbeat tune and fun at the same time.

Andy: Totally agree with Jack Johnson, couple that come to mind for no particular reason are: PM Dawn – “Set a Drift on Memory Bliss” and Isley Brothers – “Summer Breeze”

Karla: I’d like to add one more to my list. And it’s not cheating because I only had three: “In The Summertime” by Mungo Jerry.

This guys SCREAMS "Summer"

Sherman: “Treme Song” – John Boutte: The theme to HBO’s spectacular Treme – a must for anyone with the slightest fondness for jazz or music as art – is new to me, but already feels like the theme of summer. In the spirit of just getting down and having a good time with friends, it hits the nail on the head.

“Doin’ Time” – Sublime: Since Kevin Thompson already snagged “What I Got” I’m going with another Sublime (“The official band of summer”) song, the group’s dub of the Ella-sung, Duke-penned masterpiece “Summertime (And The Living’s Easy)”. It’s got all the smooth lethargy of the original, plus Sublime’s modifications that add a modern perspective. Apparently that means drowning your girlfriend, but that gangsta-shit always sounds so chill from Sublime (see: Santeria)

“Stars and Stripes Forever” – John Phillips Sousa: Maybe it’s a product of growing up close to the District, but it’s hard to imagine a hot, sticky summer day without an armed forces band playing the Sousa classics on the Mall.

“Window Seat” – Erykah Badu: If Sousa is summer’s heat and humidity, Erykah Badu is the cement slab in your unfinished basement that you lay down on spread eagle to keep cool. Seriously, this song deserves to be known for its own merits, not its sensationalist video. It’s so smooth. Also, what’s summer without the police needlessly hassling black people?

Nathan: Wilco – “Heavy Metal Drummer”- I have a friend who once claimed that he would only likes to listen to Wilco in the summer. I’m not sure he still adheres to this belief, and I hope he doesn’t because I think it’s silly. However, I agree with him that they’re a great summer band. “I miss the innocence I’ve know/ Playing Kiss covers beautiful and stoned” is also a great summer lyric.Iggy and the Stooges- “Search and Destroy”- “I’m a street walkin’ cheetah with a heart full of napalm” is one of my favorite opening lines for a song. This song is fast and great for those summer car chases.

Vampire Weekend – “A-Punk”- Their entire first album is great for Summer, but, as Musso would attest to, it’s pretty hard not to feel upbeat when this song is playing.

Local Natives – “Airplanes”- I caught this band listening to internet radio and they slowly grew on me. Technically a 2010 pick because their album didn’t release in the US until February 2010 although it had been out in the UK since 2009. Their sound has been compared to Fleet Foxes and Arcade fire. This song fits the mood of summer very well.

Seth: “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” by John Denver- Not much sounds better than Denver crowing about how good he’s got it down on the farm when the temperatures rise. It’s a song most people know and that helps in BBQ settings. I grew up listening to Mr. Denver and there’s something that calls me back about this jam, I can’t help but think about running around without shoes on (which I love), wearing overalls (which I don’t), and sitting on a porch with an ice cold drink (which I do).

Summer Fashion DON'T

“Constructive Summer” by The Hold Steady- I can’t help but think of my friends when I hear this song. And the fact that I don’t drink “double whiskey, coke, no ice” doesn’t stop me from wanting one every time Craig Finn says it. And despite the fact that I’ve never climbed up the water tower and drinked and talked doesn’t mean I couldn’t. I love the nostalgia in this song, even if its his; the message still applies, “we’re gonna build something this summer.”

“Surfin’ USA” by the Beach Boys- Did it really take this long to get this band on the list? Were people afraid of being TOO right? The quintessential summertime band here with their unifying ultraclassic. Just pack your cooler, throw on your flops, and let these guys do the rest. I can’t even think about the beach without thinking about the Beach Boys thanks to years being groomed to love them. And funnily enough, later in life, I came back to them on my own. It hits all of the summertime pop culture conventions of youth: ditching school, partying at the beach, riding giant waves (?), and loose surf guitar rock. Stick this in your summer and smoke it.

“Excuses” by The Morning Benders- I don’t know if I subscribe to the idea of instant classics or not. But this song makes me believe a little more. Released just in March, I can tell I’ll be hearing this one a lot over the summer. I love the opening which sounds like the beginning of a Hawaiian tourism as and then in come the rattling, rumbling drums and the singing strings. And it’s about the cutest love song I’ve heard in awhile and warm weather just brings out the Romeo/Juliet in all of us (hopefully with less of the dying). There are so many layers of instruments that it’s confusing when the song just washes over you like so many breakers on the sands, but things swell smoothly as to create one unified, beautiful sound.

BONUS SONG: “Wavin’ Flag” by K’Naan- You might as well get used to it because you’re gonna’ hear it a TON. It’s the official song of the World Cup and it’s also rather catchy and exciting. It’s an uplifting anthem and you’ll be better for it. Karla, you especially better get used to it.

Slip n slides here you come! Seriously I can’t wait to play this list at every BBQ I throw this year, it’s going to be great. Some really strong work out there team. Bikins ahoy! Other summer stuff, etc, etc. Think of us when you play and imagine how very summery we’re being. It’s probably more summery than you. And now what you’ve all been waiting for. the playlist. What are your favorite summer jams? TELL US! I want to make a reader’s fave playlist! Add em up and I’ll post it!

Seeing as how this is the last week that LOST will grace our airwaves, I think it only right since so many of the panelists watch the show that we recount our favorite moments or episodes from the show, try to limit it to two or three. And welcome a special guest panelist: Special Scout blogger Amal Aboulhosn. LOST has been more than a TV show for 6 seasons. More than TV show?! Yeah, it has redefined what a TV show can be expanding what fans expect out of their viewing experience and bringing some to the point of obsession. I mean heck, I’ve read a couple books referenced in it myself. And reading is hard. I think that’s why we should really give a little retrospective on some of LOST‘s best moments as seen by the Matter crew.

Seth:

Faith Reborn

With just a flick of the switch, Locke literally and figuratively sees the light. This is an undeniably spine-tingling moment in LOST lore. What we thought was changed in that exact moment just through that sliver of light. Incredible.

What a lovely sandal!

“I don’t know what is more disquieting; the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes.” - Sayid
That about covers it. I was blown away by the statue when it first appeared and it remained my #1 mystery up until it was finally solved. Just all kinds of WTF.

Favorite Episode: It’s still “The Constant.” Never has such a trippy, time-bending, mind-bending piece of science fiction held such emotional weight and pure romantic bliss as this episode. Even the title of the episode is brilliant and works for both the science and the romantic side. At times, Sun and Jin have played the role of the emotional love story of LOST but I don’t think they’ve ever really matched the almost-over-the-top way that Penny and Des portray their love story. This is definitely a singular achievement in 42 minutes. And also I know I just stole a LOT of people’s answers, but that’s what you get for being the chief.

Patrick: Mine were:

“Through the Looking Glass:” Charlie’s revelation that the boat sent to the island was not Penny’s; that entire episode was a treatise on whether fate or free will reigns supreme and it really did a great job of not completely answering the question. It is still hands-down my favorite season finale of the series.

Never See Sharpies the same way again.

“The Other Woman:” Juliet, Charlotte and Daniel fight in the Tempest station; this episode was a pinnacle moment for Juliet and getting to see Ben’s horrifying effect on her life and the other side of the beginning of the story was phenomenal.

With the Gun, For the Win

Amal: My favorite episode is also “The Constant.” Hm.

I also love the opening of ”Tale of Two Cities.” Seeing the Dharma life and placing time/space by seeing 815 plane split overhead was completely enlightening. I might’ve punched the sky in my living room on that one. I also love that Juliet and Ben have book club beef. Let’s not forget, too, that Juliet is crying to Petula Clark’s “Downtown,” and the whole moment is perfect.

Absolute favorite moment on the show: when Hurley and Charlie jumpstart the Dharma van and Three Dog Night’s “Shambala” is playing on the tape. It ranks pretty high on the list for amazing use of a pop song in a television series.

Also love: When Sayid snaps the chicken head. It’s just so f’ing awesome, and probably how manhood should be defined for all.

Seth: Setting the manhood bar with the Republican Guard’s certifiable badass seems, I don’t know, a little unfair.

Josh: Patrick made a good call about “Through the Looking Glass”, but it’s one of my favorites b/c it was the first time they used aflash forward. I definitely didn’t see that coming. This finale gave us a look into how the following seasons would go (ie people get off the island, not all is well once they leave, they have to go back.)

One of my favorite, but less talked about episodes is “I Do”. This episode is in Season 3 while Jack, Kate, and Sawyer are being held by the Others on Hydra Island. “I Do” is the episode where Kate tries to save Sawyer from being killed by adisgruntled Other and ends up climbing in his cage for a little rumble in the jungle if you know what I mean. This is one of my favorite scenes:

Kevin: I must say that I agree with many folks that “Through the Looking Glass” is the best. While Charlie drowning with the ”Not Penny’s Boat” note is by far the most emotional moment for me in the show, and it seems everyone else’s-this episode really made me think that these writers were brilliant. The whole episode you get what you think are flashbacks to Jack, addicted to codeine and drinking, trying to commit suicide and upset at a coffin you don’t see the contents of-all capped off with a late night meeting with Kate. In that moment when she get’s out of the car and you realize your seeing the future and that they do one day get off and that the next season will tell that story pretty much made my brain explode. no actually it did, I’ve never been the same.

Brad: I think the best moments (and the only ones that have kept me with this show at this point) on the show have all been Locke related. Realizing it was his wheel chair after the crash, seeing him played by his dad, left by Katey Seagal, pushed out the window, left behind on the walkabout, hit by Desmond, strangled by Ben, etc.. He’s really been the only character that I’ve felt empathetic towards–he always gets so close to having his shit together but fate/Lost writers refuse to leave him be! And what does he get for his overly trusting naivete? He becomes the embodiment of EVIL!?!? How cruel, Lost. How deliciously cruel.

Steve: I love all of the choices so far, but I’m going to go way back to season 1 with “The Moth”. Just a great Charlie episode with fighting theheroine addiction, the cave in at the caves, and rescuing Jack. Overall transformation moment for Charlie.
Summer: Wow Josh, you and I are Lost-mates. Those are my two favorite moments and my favorite character as well! “Through the Looking Glass” is hands down the BEST episode of Lost, if not of television.

“Not Penny’s Boat” is my favorite scene because of the emotion. Just when you think Charlie has reversed fate and will make it, he dies. In the process, he was sacrificing this life to save his friends. And at the same time, you are left with this huge question mark ofwho’s boat did these people come on and why are they here. I’m also a fan of the scene where Hurley drives the van onto the beach. Hurley saves the day and Sayid kills someone with his legs. That one got my jumping up in down in my seat.

The cage sex scene in “I Do” carries a lot of steam obviously but also has heart. Kate has the opportunity to run (let’s face it, she could find a way to get to the other island), which she has spent her life doing yet stays for Sawyer (and/or Jack?). The desperation in this scene is just spot-on.

I know I am going over the limit, but I have to include the CPR scene in “All the Best Cowboys have Daddy Issues.” It shows a positive side of Jack’s refusal to let go and frustration with himself. And Charlie comes back to life so it’s a happy ending. It’s just such powerful stuff. You think Charlie’s gone, you feel with Jack and his anger, and then you get to be happy when Charlie comes back. So many emotions in just one scene.

Narrowing down just a few was hard. There’s so many moments that represent different parts of what I love about Lost. The high-action kick-ass parts, the emotional heart-wrenching parts, the relationship lovey-dovey parts, the parts that renewed my faith in the show, the parts that worked together to get me hooked in the beginning, the parts that uncovered vital information, and the parts that have all of that in just one scene.

I know I only speak for myself, but I feel I speak for many of those who contributed here saying that we are going to be well sad when LOST closes its final chapter, whatever the end may bring. Frankly, I’ve given up any thought that they would solve EVERY MYSTERY on the show. I mean COME ON. Six seasons of answering questions only to find more buried directly beneath, you can’t expect them to answer them all. I’ve been happy enough to have some of the great mysteries of my own solved and I’m happy for that.

A friend of mine mentioned that he was afraid that all of this could be one big red herring-fest. Which at first really put me in a sour mood, but since that time, I’ve begun to wonder if it matters at all. What possible ending to LOST would you be happy with at this point? I have begun to look at it this way, I’ve watched a show which I have voluntarily invested a lot of time in. More than many of its other fans in some regards (summer reading, alternate reality games, countless hours spent with my fellow LOST detective sister on forums and Wikipedia). But I’m happy I’ve been able to witness something like this and the story that is being told isn’t my story to finish. It’s the LOST team’s. I’m just happy to have been along for the ride. I don’t think LOST is the best TV show of all time, but I do believe it to be a singular television achievement. A show which captivates, entertains, and educates like few ever have of ever will is not to be scoffed at as simply a red herring fest. In fact maybe the meaning of LOST is going to be left to its viewers to decide. There have been myriad themes presented, dissected, and pontificated upon since the show’s inception and weaving all of those together to tell a story is hard enough, divining a meaning from it may be too much to ask. DO NOT take this as my way of saying I don’t care what the meaning is. I do. But I have come to believe that maybe the meaning is something that will be defined by each LOSTie for themselves. I know one thing is for sure, it has been one hell of a mysterious ride. So thanks Team LOST for giving your faithful fans something to chomp at the bit for and for making something epic and grand (albeit with shoddy computer graphics from time to time) and for being unafraid to go absolutely off the wagon with science fiction and taking all of those uninitiated sci-fi phobics with you. And thanks for being original within the shell of your story, so many comparisons have been made to LOST but none of them stick. I think that’s because we have a true original vision (DO NOT PROVE ME WRONG ON SUNDAY!) and that is something that is increasingly rare in our world. No matter how things end, whatever happens, happens. Namaste.

Seth: Anything you guys want to debate this week? I am the proverbial well-run-dry. Is there a proverb with a dry well? If not, there should be!

Sherman: Have we done spin-offs? Because I would love to see one of Brother Mouzone and Lamar (from The Wire) driving from town to town, solving mysteries and settling old scores.

Brad: I don’t know. That first one is pretty good. I don’t know if I can do any better. Can they have a Scobby Doo-esque theme song?

Sherman: Yes. And wacky sound effects, with a laugh track. I’m thinking Disney Channel.

Seth: OK yes, I want this.

Chase: The current most obvious and rumored to be coming is a prequel to Spartacus…. The Rise of Crixus: Champion of Capua.

Seth: For me the most obvious recent one is from LOST: Jacob and MIB: The Early Years.

Sherman: Please let it be animated with them as toddlers, like Muppet Babies.

This IS actually a lot like something from LOST

Seth: Question for Lostie Babies: Do they retain 5 o’ clock shadows?

Sherman: Of course, and every time they open a door the smoke monster gets them via a clip from an episode of LOST.

Seth:I also think Gilmore Girls could have easily semi-spun off a show about the Inn that Lorelai and Sookie ran. It would have been likeNewhart just much wittier. And yeah, I said Gilmore Girls.

Brad: I think Gilmore Girls tried to spin off a show about Jess once and FAILED. I need equal parts Lorelai and Rory to make that show watchable. Though, with that being said, a spinoff show where Rory and I spend our life together traveling Europe and spending Old Yale money would be pretty on point.

Sherman: Sorry, Chase, I missed your Spartacus: Blood and Sand spin-off earlier. I think Rise of Crixus would be good, but perhaps better… Lucy Lawless: Boobs.

Jim: So far as I understand it, isn’t that pretty much what Spartacus: Blood and Sand is in the first place?

Seth: Chase mentioned Jesse and the Rippers show from Full House fame. And that would be great and all, but even better would be to seethe Zack Attack story from Saved By The Bell played out over a season of glorious television. It would be like Behind The Music. that would kill.

After seeing Kick-Ass this weekend (which, go do it, if you haven’t) I would love to see a Hit Girl movie on its own. It would be like theawesome version of that crappy Elektra they spun off from that crappy DareDevil.

Jim:As great as The Wrestler was, I think it would be 10x edgier if there were a spin off that told the story from the perspective of The Ayatollah. I’m imagining a mix between WWE Smackdown and an Iranian themed Bend it Like Beckham. Who’s with me?

Chase: That reminds me there was an awesome sketch on Robot Chicken Last night featuring a Hogan’s Heroes remake with Hulk Hogan and his WWF cronies.

Patrick: I’d like to see a spinoff from Battlestar Galactica, but it would be set about 50 years in the past and detail how the Cylons were originally created. All kidding aside, though, it would be cool to see a show featuring the rise of the Alliance from Firefly, like the events leading up to and following the war. Or maybe a movie detailing how the Borg came to exist. There was a trilogy of books explaining it but it was lackluster-ish.

Kevin: I hate the standard 4 camera sitcom with laugh track/live audience, however I think it would be funny to apply the Friends format starring Murray from Flight of the Concords. The show follows him sans the band (deported) and his strange New York neighbors and his attempts to guide band shell tours in short shorts. Those HP commercials are funny, but I need more Murray in my life. I would watch.

The Ayatollah idea isawesome. The idea of Gilmore Girls continuing in any way makes me want to remove my ears, no one ever talks like that.

Reality show spinoff-Sunny Garcia punches strangers in the face. This idea is a spinoff of the short lived North Shore where UPN (I think) followed a group of pro surfers living in a house on the north shore, because I will watch anything on tv about surfing I saw it afew times. The only memorable thing was when Sunny Garcia, a large, angry, ex world champ punched some dude on the beach right in the head (knocked him out I believe) for looking at his girlfriend, who is very hot and was wearing the smallest bathing suit in theworld. This idea is my version of South Park‘s Russel Crowe show where he fights his way around the world with a tugboat.

Seth: Oh you mean the Animated Russell Crowe Documentary.

Sherman: Spun-off from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is Everybody Hates Jar-Jar: After the destruction of the Republic and the death of Padme Amidala, Jar-Jar Binks is forced to downgrade from his fancy Coruscant apartment and move in with his uptight, working-man cousin Dave and his fast-talking shrewish wife — and don’t forget about that wacky Mon Calamari neighbor!

Spun-off from Married with Children and In Cold Blood is Buried with Children: This HBO mini-series follows the tracking, capture, trial, and execution of Al Bundy after going nuts and murdering his family. Something like In Cold Blood, but starring Ed O’Neill.

Spun-off from CSPAN is Real World: CSPAN: Several Congressman live together in a house (not the House) with cameras on them and this one Senator that thinks he’s better than everyone. They will say stupid things and insult each other, just like regular CSPAN, but it will be accompanied by “confession” segments.

Spun-off from V is some show that is actually worth watching: it would star Elizabeth Mitchell. Maybe as a fertility scientist on a mysterious island, who beats the shit out of people.

Summer: Veronica Mars spin-off: Keith Mars in the early days of his PI career.

Community spin-off: Chevy Chase in his early days as well, although casting for that would be near impossible.

30 Rock Spin-off: Gavin Valure.

I know you’re probably expecting me to say a LOST spin-off, but its too early at this point to propose one; we don’t know what else they are going to show us before the end so all spin off avenues might be closed or random others might be opened! Ask again on May 24th.

Seth: Well, I think one of the best spin offs for Lost has already been “proposed” by the LOST writers and producers: Miles and Sawyer Buddy Cop Dramedy. GOLD. “This Fall, Sawyer and Miles will take on the Smoke of LA.” Cause Smoke=Bad.

Not a bad job there panel! Maybe I should let you out of the cage more often. We really focused a lot on TV so maybe there are some really good movie spin-offs we missed. Perhaps some YOU could suggest Rambling Nation? I want to see more comments and I want to see them now!

KILLER!

Seriously, Allen Iverson probably had the best crossover of all time, but let’s not forget who popularized the move ,Tim Hardaway. There’s some basketball facts for you guys! How does this relate to well, anything? Read on!

So Chase of Matter Fame and I were talking the other day and he suggested a pretty strong topic on the heels of a Flintstones-Jetsons crossover cartoon extravaganza discussion. Do you guys remember this? They did a whole crossover storyline where each was on theother’s show. It was awesome. It was like mixing the two best cartoons of the time into one wacky juiced up storyline.

Other great crossovers:

- Wacky Races

- Harlem Globetrotters on Scooby Doo (later referenced in a classic Futurama episode)- I don’t really know if this counts as a true crossover, I like the basketball reference though so deal with it.

So we got to talking and we wanted to know: What’s your dream crossover event? Negative points for David Caruso guest starring on any of the other CSIs. Go!

O-M-G! The cartoon came to life.

Sherman: Elizabeth Mitchell playing Juliet on Alias.

Seth: (Confused Look)

Caroline: My two favorite tv shows of old already did a weak crossover if you recall Detective Munch from Homicide arresting the Lone Gunmen of X-Files fame.BUT I would pay money to see Mulder and Scully team up with McNulty (The Wire) to solve some paranormal (and of course corrupt) Baltimore mystery. Omar as deepthroat? Yes please!

Nate: I’d love to see Omar square up against the Smoke Monster. Which is scarier: Clicking noises or “Farmer in the Dell?”

Chase: Omar would totally kick Smokeys ass and take all his Spider Bags.

Back to the topic at hand sweet crossover specials, the pop culture kind:

- Crocodile Dundee/ Indiana Jones: I honestly do not know how this would work or why it would even happen but it would basically be thecoolest thing that ever happened.

- Bones/Castle: 2 of the best guy/girl crime fighting solving pairings on TV. I really want to see Beckett and Booth fighting over jurisdiction. I think Castle would really enjoy working alongside Bones. Science vs Fiction? As good as that paring is I think the real potential for fun and lust? might be between the supporting staffs Espisito and Ryan would have a field day at the Jeffersonian.

Karla: It seems there’s a lot of fodder for crossover in the sci-fi and comic book world. those are the first two that I thought of but as I am googling these, I see that my idea is completely unoriginal and I lack the depth of knowledge to do any of them justice.

I did, however, watch a LOT of Saturday morning cartoons. I think I’d kind of like to see Yogi Bear vs. Bugs Bunny in a battle of wits. Maybe expand that to Hanna Barbera cartoons versus Warner Brothers’ Looney Toons. There’s interesting deadweights and star players on either side. Strong players for HB squad are: Jonny Quest, Yogi, and Papa Smurf. Deadweights include: Huckleberry Hound and Magilla Gorilla. However, Looney Toons boasts Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, and Roadrunner. Strength, wits, and speed. Deadweights for this team include: Wile E. Coyote and Elmer Fudd.

Who would drop the most anvils? How would the speed of Speedy Gonzalez and Road Runner match up against Jonny Quest’s prowess in judo and scuba diving? Would Bugs be able to steal more “pic-a-nic” baskets than the practiced hand of Yogi and Boo-Boo? I’d like to find out.

Chase: Karla interesting point however you missed a potential sweet heavyweights showdown… which now that I think on it must have been the drive behind Seth McFarlane and his Peter vs Chicken Fights: Captain Caveman vs Foghorn Leghorn

Itching for a fight

(INSERT like 10 different ideal “faceoffs”)

Patrick: How about Galactica finds a wormhole and visist Deep Space 9. They marvel at the hopeful universe they’ve been denied and return to their own dejected but determined to find a way to have that sugary future.

Chase: I have a vision and it beautiful….
Crossover: Chuck / Big Bang Theory

Episode: Chuck Versus Bazinga!

Plot:

- Leonard receives and undisclosed fellowship/grant from a Ring Operative to fund his research in developing a new Laser to solve some physics conundrum that is beyond any normal persons understanding. Sheldon is obviously jealous that Leonard has attracted an accolade for his clearly pedestrian work and immediately forces himself on the project.
- In Burbank- – Chuck and team are alerted that the ring is trying to secure a new gamma ray device from the crew at Cal tech and has to go flush out the operatives using the scientists as bait.- Chuck bonds with Leonard… many BSG/Trek/Tron references ensue.
- Sheldon is not happy and stuck in some way paired up with Casey, a monkey could write how that ends, I sense quite a few tranq darts here
- Penny goes to the buy-more to find Leonard gets hit on by Jeffster…saved by Morgan who tries to seduce her at his apt
- Sarah gets stuck paired with Walowitz and Rajesh. I am picturing the threesome sharing a Brisket with Walowitz’s mother, with Rajesh either totally silent or so drunk he won’t shut up.

Ending
- Who cares this is going to be one fun ride…

Josh:
Family Matters / Full House

Danny Tanner’s morning TV show decides to shoot in Chicago for a week. While in Chicago, Danny finds out that he has a crazy stalker. Worried about his family, he asks for police protection. Cue Carl Winslow to save the day. The Tanners move in with theWinslows and all kinds of shenanigans ensue. Of course there will be a scene where Urkel ruins something exclaiming “Did I do that?” and little Stephanie replys with “How rude!” I would also expect a romantic story line between Uncle Joey and Aunt Rachel. (Let’s be honest, Joey and Rachel need to get some.) Unfortunately things don’t work out between Joey and Rachel because San Fran and Chicago are just too far apart…. but its mostly because ABC doesn’t think America is ready for an interracial couple on family TV. Thebest part of this crossover is that YOU WILL LEARN SO MANY LIFE LESSONS!

Saved by the Bell / California Dreams

California Dreams was another NBC teen show that was basically Saved by the Bell but with a slightly more diverse cast. Thecrossover episode would revolve around a Battle of the Bands competition where Zach Attack faces off against California Dreams. Ofcourse a sleazy record agent would create some kind of drama between the two bands. They would play pranks on each other, fight, and then feel really bad about what a shot at fame has done to them. Cue the final scene as both bands play “Friends Forever” and winthe Battle of the Bands. Reminds me of my high school experience.

Dinosaucers / Dino-Riders

Just imagine super intelligent dinosaurs riding dinosaurs with lasers attached to them, or better yet, men riding super intelligent dinosaurs that have lasers. I don’t really care about the details, only that two of the worst dino cartoons are combined into one abomination. If we could find a way to get Denver: The Last Dinosaur into this crossover, my head would explode.

I would also like to mention that any show crossing over with Street Sharks would be awesome.

Josh's First Band Name and Album Title

Then Steve wrote some incoherent babble crap and everyone was disappointed in him, especially EVERYONE. No but really, we only scratched the surface here folks, some of these things are awesome and I really want to see what Hollyweird can come up with. Instead of retreading old things, let’s put our old things in a blender and see what comes out. Any other bright crossover ideas?

OSCAR. IS. HERE. (ALMOST).

Personally, I’ll be wearing a Jean Christian Penney (pronounced Penn-AY) suit for the red carpet this Sunday, and drinking only the finest boxed wine. It’s a night where all of our favorite stars get dressed up and get to be self-important smug people and get recognized for how well they can be someone else. When you think of it like that, it’s just kinda icky all around actually.

Listen, I know we’re all a little teed off still that Crank: High Voltage wasn’t nominated for anything (not even Best Documentary! Shenanigans Academy, Shenanigans!), but being the pop culture harlot that I am (we are) these things still matter (right!?). A lot of times I think to myself, “I hate the Oscars” or “Morgan Freeman is like the PB and J of actors” but really neither of those things matter this Sunday because: IT’S OSCARGEDDON Y’ALL. Predict away!

The Morgan Freeman of Sandwiches

Andy: Bill and Ted, it’s long overdue.

Karla: I would like Christophe Waltz for Inglourious in the supporting actor category, but I fear he may lose it to Christopher Plummer. I have some issues with Invictus nominees because while the acting was good, I felt like the story was so powerful that it lent the roles more weight than the performances of the actors themselves actually merited. I haven’t seen Crazy Heart, but everyone tells me Jeff Bridges is a lock for Best Actor. I did love Up and if I could nominate Doug the Dog for something, I absolutely would. It won’t win best picture, but it’ll win almost everything else it’s nominated for. How do those Pixar guys do it? I would have liked In the Loop to be on there somewhere. I thought it was hilarious, smart, and well-acted. I would like to add a “Mockumentary” category to the Oscars.

I think I’ve now listed every movie I saw in theaters this year, so this exhausts the categories I can speak about with conviction.

Brad: “Footloose” for best song. Look, just because it was released over two decades ago doesn’t mean that it is no longer the best song in a movie. And isn’t that what the Oscars are really judging? Excellence in filmmaking. This is my glorious fight.

Chase: Theodore Chipmunk for Best Actor.

Best Actor Shoe-In

Jim: 1. Steve Martin will realize halfway through that he is utterly bombing recorrecting his route in one of the two following ways: A. Man this is starting suck, HEY GUYS, LOOK HOW GOOD I AM AT BANJO, B. Alec Baldwin joins him on stage and they host the last hour and a half as two WILD AND CRAZY GUYS

2. Steve Martin falls ill and is replaced by Zach Galifinakis.

3. On the scale of host performances, Steve Martin will rate somewhere between Whoopi Goldberg and Greg Gumbel.

That’s all I got.

Sherman:Nicolas Cage, lifetime achievement award.

Steve: “Footloose” has tough competition this year with “The Jonas Brothers 3D Concert Experience”.

As far as Best Actor: I’m going Ben Stiller from Night at the Museum 2: Battle at the Smithsonian. I mean he was sensational. He just crushed his performance in the first night at the museum by taking it all the way to DC.

Best Heist of the Year:

Jim Carrey for starring in the same movie twice without the critics noticing. ( Liar Liar 2: Yes Man)

Chase: On a more serious note my predictions…

-Picture : Avatar

-Dude : Jeff Bridges – - movie is awesome go see it if you haven’t

-Dudette: Helen Mirren

-Supporting Dude: Christoph Waltz

-Supporting Dudette: Mo’nique

-Directing: Cameron

Sherman: No, director goes to Bigelow, because there’s never been a best director that’s a woman and because Cameron already has one. I agree with all the others, though I put it at 50-50 Avatar or Hurt Locker.

Seth: Amateur hour is over, here’s the fearless predictions you wanted:

1. James Cameron will exceed the over/under of 50 on shots of him looking smug.

2. The creators of Ferngully will stage a minor protest about their story being ripped off without credit.

3. George Clooney will simultaneously bed all of the Nominees for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, and even a few of the animated nominees (Can I get a “Princess and the Frog”!?)

4. The Goonies cast will reunite for one night only to perform as a band, the hit single from their soundtrack “Goonies R Good Enough”. (Also known as Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Goonies Remix))

5. Brad Pitt will carve a swastika into Jennifer Aniston/Angelina Jolie. It’s a toss-up.

6. Malcolm Tucker from In The Loop (which if you haven’t seen all of you will love) will drop F-Bombs like the Germans on Blitzkrieg (is it always too soon for Blitzkrieg jokes?) if In The Loop doesn’t win Adapted Screenplay.

7. Morgan Freeman will mount the stage after losing to Jeff Bridges and accuse everyone at the Academy of being racist, followed by Monique of Precious: Based on a Novel which makes this the longest movie title everrrrrrrr will post up in one of the GIANT Oscar statues and start screaming for world peace.

8. Cristoph Waltz will have a beard. Only one thing is scarier than a Nazi Zombie and it’s Cristoph Waltz with a beard.

9. The Coen Brothers will give an slow-burning, electrifying speech and cut it off mid-sentence RIGHT as it started to really sizzle.

10. Jeremy Renner will disappear halfway through the show because he just HAS to go back. Kate! He has to go back!

And some real ones:

-Film: The Hurt Locker, if Avatar wins I won’t be surprised, but I will be disappointed.

-Actress: I think this is the biggest toss up, but I’m gonna give it to Sandra Bullock, because she made everyone care about this family movie as an Oscar contender. A nod to Carey Mulligan, who was fantastic in An Education.

-Actor: I absolutely LOVED Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker, but it looks like the Dude is taking this one for Crazy Heart

-Supporting Actress: My vote would be for Anna Kendrick for Up In The Air, but I think that Mo’Nique has this one locked up for Precious.

-Supporting Actor: Cristoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds which for my money is the best performance of the year.

-Animated Film: After viewing 20 minutes, I knew it was UP and I didn’t need to see any of the others, although I did watch a few of them. Pixar FTW!

-Director: Kathryn Bigelow becomes the first female director to snag the Oscar. All Cameron did was make pretty (very pretty) CG. Bigelow punched you in the gut with The Hurt Locker.

-Original Screenplay: Inglourious Basterds, just some brilliant, brilliant slow burns in this movie and the words are what made it happen. Great writing on this piece. Could also see this going to The Hurt Locker. Funny in my world it would be either VERY wordy or Sparsely worded at all.

-Adapted Screenplay: I think Up In The Air will win, but In The Loop SHOULD. Definitely the quickest-paced and witted film I saw this year.

THAT is how you put the peanut butter on the jelly, ramblers! Who’s going to win big on Sunday? Give me your thoughts!

Ramblers! Brands are cool. Let’s be honest. Sony is awesome, Apple is chic, and Google is some mix of super cool and super creepy. But they are all around us EVERYWHERE. One of the things that makes brands so indelible in our culture is their logo, it may be a simple word (Sony, Google) or a picture (Apple). Either way, when I say those brand names their logo probably pops into your head. A recent short film called Logorama explores this brand culture by using all of the brand names and logos to depict our world. Very cool, and kinda creepy. You can watch it here.

Anyways, pop culture is not immune to this brandification, in fact many movies create or pimp brands just as bad in the fake world as they do in the real one. Quentin Tarantino’s “Red Apple” cigarettes are a great example as they are the brand used almost exclusively in his films. There are tons of others and many which are really well-known. I guess it’s just another example of art imitating life. Or art trying to be life. I digress.

I’m gonna let the wolves chase this one first. What’s your favorite made-up for pop culture brand?

Sherman: I win, because I am rushing to claim… BRAWNDO… THE THIRST MUTILATOR. Not only does it have electrolytes (they’re what plants crave), but it has replaced water everywhere except from the toilet. Even Brawndo Fountains (or bubblers, depending on where you’re from) will exist to dispense Brawndo. Also, it’s got electrolytes.

Jim: I second the Sherman the idiocrat.

I will have to nominate an old standby that’s fallen on hard times recently, Acme. Not the supermarket, but the company that makes specializes in explosive devices put to use by various stars of the cartoon screen in Looney Tunes and the ill-forgotten Animaniacs. As a kid, we shopped at an Acme, and I secretly hoped we’d get bombs instead of eggs every time. Until Animaniacs came on the air, my favorite cartoon by a long shot was Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. Without Acme, that cartoon has a lot less mileage. Really, Roadrunner’s speed is a set up. Oh, yes, he can outrun the coyote, this is a known fact. Not exactly funny. [Here's where the pyromaniac 8-year old kicks in] BUT what if Coyote is strapped to a rocket??? Can the Roadrunner outrun him then??? YES HE CAN HOLY S*** THAT IS AMAZING.

CLASSIC! Image credit: Alex Ross.

Seth: Really enjoying picturing Jim as a kid being super disappointed with his scrambled eggs when he realized they were not anvils, rockets, and super skates. ACME Co. rules.

Chase: I have put a lot of thought to this in the for 20 whole minutes. I have many favorite brands both real and fake and if they are not mentioned in this thread I will post a list at the end. My choice is the Sheinhardt Wig Company. This is one of 30 Rock‘s best bits and for anyone who knows about GE, it’s hysterical. I hope one day to be able to show off a business card with the title “Director of East Coast Television and Microwave Oven Programming.”

Brad: Yeah, Acme is very classic–probably the most recognizable cartoon brand. BUT A CLOSE SECOND is Duff. Much as Acme was a manufacturer for pretty much any device that Looney Tunes needed for a plot point, The Simpsons use Duff for such a variety of purposes–as a theme park to skewer Disney, as a variet of specialty brands to skewer the brewing industry, as a mascot to skewer modern marketing, etc. Just a great fall back. OH YEAHHHH!!

(Insert Several DUFFMAN references: “thrusting in the direction of the problem”, “can’t breathe!!”, “can never die…only the actors that play him!!!”)

Seth: Personally, I think you’ve all missed the mark. Just a smattering of the glowing praise in the mere presence of this brand’s product:

-”It smells like, like a used diaper… filled with… Indian food.”

-”It smells like bigfoot’s d***.”

-”Smells like a turd covered in burnt hair.”

-”60% of the time, it works every time.”

-”It’s illegal in 9 countries.”

Ladies and gents, I give Odeon’s “Sex Panther” from Anchorman.

Josh: With the number of loyal LOST fans on this thread, I can’t believe that Dharma hasn’t come up. Those jokers branded everything…… ranch dressing, cola, beer, cereal….. I’m willing to bet that Smokey has a Dharma bumper sticker stuck to its butt. I’m sure that this final season will bring us some great new Dharma products and tag lines:

Dharma Condoms: “So your lady friend won’t die in childbirth”

Dharma Razors: “Women, you get smooth legs and armpits. Men, five o’clock shadows”

Dharma Caskets: “Because Jacob or Smokey might NOT heal your wounds”

Seth: Or how about: Dharma Caskets: “Just in case you really didn’t want your relative dead.”

ALSO, the other brand I like a lot from movies is Pizza Planet from the Pixar movies. Pixar is one of the KINGS of putting fake brands in all of their flicks and I’m sure you’ll all remember the Pizza Planet truck in Toy Story and the actual restaurant itself as home to those amazing little aliens. Pizza Planet would chop off Chuck E Cheese’s head and serve it on one of their (probably) delicious pizzas. And you’d eat it, cause you’re a human and Pixar has mind control over humans. Graphic.

Chase: If you’re entering Pizza Planet can I raise you one Stan Mikitas?

Brad: Do either of them serve Bluth Cornballs?

Steve: So I’ve just now had the first opportunity to respond. Seth, you read my mind. I was gonna go “Sex Panther” all the way, but now that it is taken I’ll have to go with another brand or two.

-Ghostbusters – I mean come on! It was a movie and a small enterprise. A group of guys who go around and take care of all your supernatural killing needs, sometimes getting slimed in the process, saving a city from a demon painting and a giant marshmallow, and doing so with humor all the way.

-Dunder Mifflin – I’m actually surprised Chase didn’t spit this one out. Fictional paper company in Scranton, PA lead by

Michael Scott. Dwight Schrute adding ridiculousness. May be slightly dysfunctional but great none-the-less.

-Coffee Bucks – a complete rip off of Starbucks and the corporation of coffee

-Shower Shorts – “For the man who has nothing to hide, but still wants to.”

Sherman: Dude, Wernham-Hogg could outsell DunderMifflin any day of the week. Sure, unlike their American cousins who are all sad sap funnymen, the Brits are all funny sad saps, but England’s got Finchy!

Chase: Dark Horse Late Entry from Ren and Stimpy …. BLAMMO the makers of “The Log”… Does anyone know if they also made the Game “Don’t Wiz on the Electric Fence”? (YES THEY DID!)

Greg: Brawndo is definitely in front. As much love as I have for Duff… THIRST MUTILATOR!

For those South Park fans out there, I propose Cherokee Hair Tampons. I know it doesn’t technically have a brand, but they did a real life commercial to be aired at the end of a commercial break to fill in seamlessly. Hilarious. The traditional blue liquid test for the product includes a bundle of hair still attached to a girl dressed as an indian.

In an episode where natural remedies become a fad, Miss Information takes the town for chumps (with the help of Cheech and Chong) selling Cherokee Hair Tampons as a more natural product because its super absorbent and indians are more in touch with nature. After it is discovered that Cheech and Chong are not indians but Mexicans, this woman just stares at her huha (I love Mila Kunis in Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and screams. Priceless.

Josh: Brawndo is great and all… but there is only ONE thirst quencher….. here.

Sherman: Sure, but Brawndo’s got ELECTROLYTES.

Steve: Another energy drink for y’all to take. If you didn’t get enough electrolytes from Brawndo (which in all honesty is impossible) or didn’t get enough real lightening in your Powerthirst then top off the morning with some BootySweat (Tropic Thunder). That’s right… Alpha Chino’s energy drink. Once you are all electrolyted up and pumped from the first two energy drinks, this will get you surrounded by lots of women. Because we all get tired of banging tractor trailers. Some of us need women…

Summer: I’m a fan of mockolate. i’ve always wondered just how bad it actually tastes.

Chase: A few more of my favorites…

-Schimtz Gay

-Oceanic Air

-Initech

-Strickland Propane

Sherman: Oh, Initech is a good one. It needs a shout out.

But you know what else does? InGen. They gave you dinosaurs. Yeah, you can have your energy drinks, I got a freaking dinosaur right here ladies.

I can’t find the video from Jurassic Park, damn copyright laws, so instead, here’s a video of the Toronto Raptors mascot eating a cheerleader. Go Canada!

I’m going to copy a wise newsman and leave you with that as your “Moment of Zen.”

Looking for love is a struggle as most of us know. It’s a battle as noble and vicious as any fight for freedom in history and one that EVERYONE in the world engages in. In this battle, it’s important to be prepared, to have the right strategy. With that in mind I turn to you brilliant panel. I’m excited for this because we have a good cross-section of folks who’ve conquered the battle, those on the last legs of the fight, and those who are fresh-faced infantry looking for the next step in the plan. To all of you, I ask: What’s your perfect pop culture date?

(Two options here, select a date from pop culture lore OR create a date focused on the pop culture you care about. Have at it.)

Patrick R: Well, in keeping with my usually short answers, I’m going to have to say that Ferris Beuller’s Day Off would be my perfect date. Skipping school/work, driving all over town and doing random fun things. It would be a blast and a great way to get to know someone or to reconnect with someone you’ve been with for awhile.

Paverick N: “Well, uh, first I’d take you shopping to stores you wanna shop in, and then we’d do a little lunch, probably at the Cheese Haus, followed by some golfing. And then at night, we’d take in an opera, probably Die Fledermaus, and then I’d follow it up with a drive to a secluded beach where I’d pop on the radio and we could slow-dance till the sun came up.”

Chase: “That was the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard. I mean, look at you. You’re the kind of guy who would beg for sex. And I should know, we can smell our own.”

(Editor’s Note: The above quotes are from Mallrats.)

Karla: Patrick stole my answer. What’s better than making out in front of a Chagall stained glass window, eating pancreas in front of a jerky restauranteur while he sucks up to you, hot tub session, driving around in SWEEEEET Ferrari, or having your boyfriend bust you out of class??

Now since my awesome first answer has been used, I’ll have to go with the 2nd option. I think I would go straight 60′s on this one. Start off at the big Friday night game, show off the pin my hunky boyfriend just gave me (we’ve been going steady for three whole weeks!) then hit up the malt shop (one shake, two straws!) then the drive-in movie theater for a cheesy horror movie we can both laugh at. Then to end the night, a romantic stroll down a tree-lined lane, where he turns into a zombie and breaks into an amazing dance with fellow zombies.

There probably wouldn’t be a second date because I sort of have a rule against dating the undead, but it would be a very memorable first date.

Sherman: You all lose. Perfect date is Willie Wonka’s Chocolate factory, in the form of an Elimidate. Winner gets my triple dipped ice cream cone. Losers get ambiguous farewell song by Oompa Loompas.

Chase: I think we really should defer to a true master of the movie first date Bill Murray. I dare one of you to point to a less attractive man who is more adept at landing women way over his ability. A three of his capstone achievements include:

Movie: Ghostbusters

Hottie: Sigorney Weaver

Evidence of Awesomeness:

Dana Barrett: Are you the Keymaster?

Dr. Peter Venkman: Not that I know of.

[She slams the door in his face. Venkman knocks again]

Dana Barrett: Are you the Keymaster?

Dr. Peter Venkman: Yes. Actually I’m a friend of his, he asked me to meet him here.

First Date Success: Not a direct success though through no fault of his own, the chick was possessed.

Movie: Groundhogs Day

Hottie: Andie McDowell

Evidence of Awesomeness:

Rita: Believe it or not, I studied nineteenth-century French poetry.

Phil: [talks in French]

Rita: You speak French?!

Phil: Oui.

First Date Success: Murray finally figured out the secret to first date success, 15 attempts.

Movie: Stripes

Hottie: The little known P.J. Soles

Evidence of Awesomeness:

Winger: Whose your buddy? Whose your Friend? I am aren’t I?

Pause

Winger: You’re crazy about me aren’t you?

Stella: No.

Winger: You’re head over heels in love with me.

Winger: You’re hopelessly, deeply in love with me.

Pause

Stella: Yes.

First Date Success: After she arrests him for leaving base without a pass and creating havoc at a topless mudwrestling club, they go back and hook up at the Base C.O. house.

The winner is…Ghostbusters. Any date that starts like this has to be good.

Dr. Peter Venkman: I make it a rule never to get involved with possessed people.

[Dana starts passionately making out with him]

Dr. Peter Venkman: Actually, it’s more of a guideline than a rule…

Steve: I have to bring up a movie that we all know and love…Anchorman. The one and only Ron Burgundy lands new newscaster Veronica Corningstone by convincing her first that she is being shown the city of lovely San Diego as a colleague. After showing how absolutely idiotic he is up on the cliffs overlooking the skyline of San Diego, he brings her to a jazz bar (silent J) in downtown SD where he shows off his Jazz (silent J) Flute capabilities. The evening ends with a journey to Pleasuretown while riding on cartoon unicorns over a rainbow that he “does her on”. That’s a pretty amazing nightcap.

San Diego + Hot Girl Way Out of League + Good Music + Solid Dinner and Drinks + Pleasure Town and Unicorns = Awesome first date

Josh: Being the romantic stud that I am, I like to keep a number of uber romantic dates in my arsenal. The first I call “The Aladdin”. I’m able to pull this romantic feat off because I possess a very princely quality (I also happen to have a magic genie and flying carpet, but it’s mostly the princeliness). Step 1: pick date up on magic carpet. Step 2: Serenade said date while flying through the night sky. Step 3:…… well, actually that’s it.
The second date in my arsenal is “The John Cusack”. Throughout this date, I pause and address the audience. I make really insightful comments about the type of person my date is, and about love in general. Naturally, I just assume nobody else can hear me during these asides. The night ends in a climactic finale as I stand outside my date’s apartment holding a boom box over my head playing Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes”. This also tends to be the part of the night where the police show up and ask me to go home.

My personal favorite is the “Action Movie Date”. This date involves defeating an evil villain, saving the day, overcoming some personal fears, and learning a little something about yourself and each other. I have found that chasing after ancient artifacts is a great way to meet woman (see Indiana Jones, The Mummy, Sahara, and National Treasure just to name a few) Unfortunately, I know nothing about ancient artifacts or history, so I’m forced to make things up Legends of the Hidden Temple style. The Sphinx? What’s that?…. Harriet Tubman’s walking stick?… yes please! (Would you like to see my silver snake?)

My last date is called the “80’s Hairband”. I really haven’t worked out the details, but somehow it will end with my date crawling on the hood of a TransAm while wearing a Whitesnake jean jacket.

I really don’t understand why I’m still single.

Seth: For the win! Am I right? The Cusack answer alone is enough, but all the other options. Too fantastic. Josh’s phone number actually spells out P-L-E-A-S-U-R-E. But that’s 8 letters you say?! He used “The Aladdin” to get the 8th number added.
