Ground Chuck: Chuck Vs. The Mask

The episode opens with a masked man lowering himself Ethan Hunt-style over a seemingly priceless artifact. Before you know it, he has triggered the security system and all of the air is being sucked right out of them room. The masked man tears off his mask to reveal the one and only Shaw who is rapidly getting into big trouble. Cut to Chuck hitting it off with Kristin Kreuk’s Hannah until Sarah pops in to apprise Chuck of the situation. He quickly runs off to help. Once Chuck arrives to fix the vault computers and save Shaw, Hannah pops up right behind.  They quickly team up to reboot the servers and save Shaw’s hide. The museum curator is so impressed he hires Chuck and Hannah for the museum opening.

With Chuck and Hannah set to work the control room, Shaw teams up with Sarah as the requisite super-hot, super spy couple attending the museum opening with Casey in tow. Once there, Hannah takes the opportunity to reveal to Chuck her true intentions, that is UNTIL she sees Sarah.  And then Chuck FLASHES and has to blow out of there to warn Shaw and Sarah that they are on the same room as a Ring agent who is linked to the very mask they are trying to pilfer.  Unfortunately, Shaw removes himself from the mission because guys “don’t forget the man who lit your face on fire.” Can’t argue there. Chuck and Sarah are reunited, right in front of Hannah.  They make haste to the vault’s ceiling in an attempt to steal the mask. Sarah and Chuck have a fiery little exchange slinging accusations at each other for their dalliances with members of the opposite sex. Sarah straps in and dangles over the mask until Chuck is booted into hole and their counterbalance is thrown as he drops into the vault. A see-saw ensues between Shaw/Casey and Hannah to keep the vault doors closed. Chuck grabs the mask and switches it out with a replica and Sarah yanks him up just as Hannah succeeds.  Chuck returns to the computer room to try to smooth things over with Hannah, but she lets him have it.

The next morning, Morgan and Ellie decide to just confront Chuck, but when the opportunity presents itself, Morgan chickens out. Sarah takes the morning to dress down Shaw about being unprofessional and making moves on her by bringing her coffee, but then Casey arrives with his Shaw-delivered joe making Sarah Baa like a sheep. Hannah is lured back to the museum by the bad guys and becomes a damsel in distress in short order getting locked in the vault. Burnt face man calls Chuck and lets him know exactly how much trouble his Lady Nerd Love was in.  Meanwhile, down in Castle Shaw and Sarah are poking the bear that is the mask and get bit when a gas canister rolls from the mask’s hidden compartment and releases a toxin. Chuck flashes on the gas and realizes he has to kill two birds with one museum trip, so he and Casey head off to the museum.  While the gas is contained Shaw attempts to apologize for his unprofessional (HANDSY!) behavior at the art museum. Sarah lets him know it was all THAT bad. I mean dude is SUPERMAN, come on!

Once there Burnt Face Man greets Chuck with two goons until Chuck plays his bluff card and releases a smoke grenade disguised as the mask’s hidden gas canister, hoping it will prompt BFM to reveal the location of the antidote. Whoops, he doesn’t know, just that it’s in a vase. So after a quick game of Smash the Vase, Chuck finds the antidote and hands it off to Casey as he works to free Hanna from the vault. Of course our hero comes through and rescues the passed-out damsel.

At the debriefing, Shaw tells Chuck that his time as a member of the team is on the horizon, which unsettles Chuck a bit. But what it really serves to do is give us a chance for a Sarah-Chuck heart-to-heart where they recanted much of what they said during their accuse-a-thon at the museum and now are like TOTALLY cool with the other following their new hearts’ desires. Sarah though seemed much less convinced.

Morgan and Ellie team up at the Buy More to await Chuck in an attempt to intervene. We see Chuck sneak into the Surround Sound Room and the Intervention Team moves in to catch him in the act of…making out with Hannah! Ellie is wildly relieved and Morgan is absolutely crushed as his buddy has taken the girl he wanted.  Shaw and Sarah stay late to “finish up paperwork” which is apparently what those spy kids are calling it these days. Shaw starts a shoulder rub on Sarah and she comments on the danger of the two of them getting involved. To which Shaw replies “I’m the safest guy in the world” which is the same as saying “I’m the most dangerous guy in the world.”  A statement which is shown true not a moment later when BFM is seen in front of The Ring in a scene oddly reminiscent of American Idol (REALLLLY cool logo, The Ring, it looks like my Windows startup screen, I mean honestly I would just think that an international spy ring would have a graphic design department).  Long story short, BFM ends up with one in the back of the neck, with the message that Shaw is in for the same.

Another great episode in this show’s 3rd season which is REALLY gaining steam. But alas, it’s our last episode until after the Winter Olympics. Do you think Sarah is really okay with Chuck moving on? Is Shaw really a “safe guy”? Will Morgan lash out at Chuck’s girl-stealing ways? And will Casey get to fire a big gun anytime soon?
