I don't understand why they seem to fumble when the artifact is outside of the western religious canon. That said, three places that Indy hasn't really been that seem really amiss: Sub-Saharan Africa, Australia and Russia. I can see him solving some kind of crazy ages-old Russian mystery that involves more familiar modern elements (Rasputin! Anastasia Romanov!) I think the big reason the Russians didn't seem authentic in this movie has something to do with the fact that they were hopping around the Amazon or the American desert the whole time. That accent plus monkey's and ants is a little too incongruous.

I like your ideas for the artifacts. What is sad to me is that the new Indy GAME has a better artifact (the Staff of Kings, supposedly Moses' staff) than the movie did. Very sad indeed. I have high hopes for Indy V though!

Well, there's always time travel to bring the Nazis back into the fray. Or a wealthy German despot from South America.
