I remember the first time I even heard about this movie was in the early 2000s and it was while reading a video game preview. The movie was being made into a videogame approximately 20 years after its release, so I figured it was probably worth a look and luckily caught it on AMC like a week later. Sweet timing.
The Thing is a horror movie, it has lotsa special effects that are straight up gross and will leave you cringing. But it’s also a really great movie about trust and paranoia. A quick synopsis: Researchers in Antarctica are infiltrated by an alien which can take the form of any organism. Paranoia ensues, so does frostbite. If you like dogs, there are some eye aversion moments. But really it’s a great scary movie. You feel cold and isolated when you watch it.
The other thing that’s great about this movie is Kurt Russell. His R.J. MacReady is one of moviedom’s alltime totally sweet dudes. Sporting what is one of moviedom’s alltime sweetest beards. Behold:
Beard PLUS flamethrower. What’s not to like? There is a LOT of flamethrower action in this movie, which is guaranteed to be awesome. And they dynamite, there is a lot of dynamite. I mean any movie where the characters walk around with dynamite strapped to themselves as a means of mutually assured destruction is pretty rad.
I give this one two giant thumbs up, especially if you are in the mood for a good scare or thrill. And if you love handmade, old school, un-cg special effects, this is a MUST-SEE. I’m kinda afraid to be alone right now, afraid the thing might get me!
