what you’ve been missing: arrested development

I would like to think by now some of you have fallen in love with the show Veronica Mars, but realize that her charms are not effective on everyone. And by “everyone” I mean “people who haven’t watched the pilot yet.” So I’m going to offer up another taste of what you’ve been missing, a show that amazed me with its intricate hilarity. And killer voice overs by Ron Howard.

Arrested Development is a show about a family in the loosest sense of the phrase. The family in question is the Bluths. They are a mishmash of the wackiest bunch of nuts ever and play off of each other with hilarious results. The father is in jail for white collar crimes and the company he used to run is now run by his son Michael, who is seemingly the most normal person in the family, but that’s not saying a lot with the Bluths. Michael does his best to keep this motley crew together, but their foibles know no bounds. Here’s a peek at their ridiculous lives:

As you can see these folks are off the wall. Now if that didn’t make you laugh, we’re probably not friends. But I understand that there was really no context, and that’s actually one of the strongest points of Arrested Development is the context set for jokes. Occasionally, jokes will be set up for 4-5 episodes in advance. Watching them on hulu in waves is an excellent way to experience this show. One of the great things about sitcom television is the way they use double meanings and have a character take something one way, when really another meaning is intended entirely. Arrested Development elevates this to an art form. It’s a really rewarding experience to get to know the Bluths.

Shame on Fox for canceling this show well before it should have ended. Talk of a movie has been rampant since the show went off the air, but reports conflict and currently the creator of the show is working on a new pilot. Enjoy EVERY episode from the three seasons of this hilarious family comedy on hulu.
